“A guide as easy and laid-back as the surfer style that inspired it. Will make readers want to add intriguing beachy design features into their own homes.”—Library Journal
The first how-to design book for capturing the effortlessly cool and playful style of California surf culture from the designer of Kelly Slater’s famous Surf Ranch.
“Crank up the color,” “Landscape your living room,” and “Adult summer camp vibes” are just a handful of the mantras that drive California interior designer Raili Clasen’s eclectic surf style. Raili grew up taking two long bus rides to the beach in Orange County, CA, so that she could drink up the cool surfer fashion, laid-back atmosphere, and retro surfboard decor and bring it all right home to her bedroom. Drawing from those early days of design experimentation and a career that took her from Raisins Swimwear to Quiksilver, Roxy, and Paul Frank—Raili is known for bottling up the spirit of surf culture and spraying it joyfully all over the homes she designs.
Surf Style at Home takes readers into Raili’s colorful, surf-inspired, checkerboard-printed mind through homes she’s designed — from quirky old beach cottages and an Alabama lake house to sprawling new-construction homes in Newport Beach, Montana’s Yellowstone Club, and beyond.
Raili cheers on readers to take that feeling they get from their favorite vacation spot or boutique hotel and bring it into their own space. Tips on maximizing outdoor spaces, utilizing earthy materials like leather and rope, and infusing your favorite song lyrics or family phrases to create uniquely personal spaces that are inviting, playful, and friendly. Featuring every design element from tile and color to textiles and plants, this is THE book on achieving surf style in your own home—regardless of where you live.
Raili Clasen stumbled into the interior design industry when she decided to try her hand at designing her own home. The finished result landed her in several magazines aiming to show readers how to capture Raili’s California eclectic surf style. Early origins at Raisins Swimwear and then California-cool brands like Quiksilver, Roxy, Paul Frank and Alice Supply Co. left lasting impressions on Raili, forging a signature, no-rules style that has been described as “design with a wink.” Raili now leads a full-service interior design team in Southern California that takes on projects ranging from funky 1920s beach cottages, to new construction at the Yellowstone Club, and Kelly Slater’s famous Surf Ranch. Her work has been featured on TV shows including HBO Max’s Beach Cottage Chronicles and Chip and Joanna Gaines’ Magnolia Network series Point of View: A Designer Profile Show. In print, Raili’s fun and inviting projects have appeared in Architectural Digest, House Beautiful, Dwell, Coastal Living, Domino, and more.
